Students in Florence 1 Schools are using art in a new way thanks to a partnership with MUSC-Florence to offer Art Therapy. Once a week, art therapist Jordan Conner works with students at North Vista Elementary and Brockington Elementary to improve communication skills and social skills.

North Vista Principal Sharon Dixon said that she has already seen positive outcomes from students participating in the program.

“This program allows children to express themselves and how they are feeling,” Dixon said. “Oftentimes, the social part of what children have experienced can cause barriers to the academic part. If we can encourage the children socially to feel good about themselves, that will only enhance what they are able to do academically."
